A 1975 Martin D-28 in excellent original condition.
This dreadnought was built during a major transition period for Martin after a decade of rapid growth. The company had significantly increased its production capacity by moving into a huge new factory in July 1964, allowing it to meet the ever-increasing demand for guitars in the post-war era. Even so, Martins were still essentially handcrafted instruments when comparing the building techniques used back then to modern standards, and at the time, the instruments leaving the Nazareth factory were undeniably the best flat-top guitars available.
The rosewood models from the late 1960s/early 1970s also reflect the shift from Brazilian rosewood, historically used for the back and sides since Martin’s early days, to Indian rosewood. As is the case with this guitar, the first Indian rosewood models boasted very high-quality wood with a regular and beautifully figured grain. The guitar also displays all the typical features of the era: a soundboard with a lovely amber natural finish and 6-ply celluloid binding, an ebony bridge with a short nut, and a black celluloid pickguard. The mahogany neck is topped with an ebony fingerboard. An interesting detail is that the headstock has much better-defined corners than those of late 1960s models. This is due to the routing jigs Martin used to shape the headstock, which, after decades of use, became increasingly rounded until they were replaced in the early 1970s—roughly around when the model presented here was built.
This D-28 remains in superb condition to this day, free of flaws except for a small, discreet, and stable repair on the top. To restore this guitar to its ideal playability and functionality, we performed a neck reset to readjust the neck angle relative to the body, counteracting the natural deformations that had occurred over the decades and thus restoring the ideal geometry for the rest of the instrument’s setup. We then proceeded with a complete refret and the crafting of a new set of nut and saddles. Finally, after a complete adjustment of the action and intonation, the guitar is now playable as if it had just left the factory yesterday!
Sold in its original Martin hardshell case.
