GIBSON L-5 CUSTOM WES MONTGOMERY 2015

Somptueux modèle L-5 électrique produit en 2015 par le Custom Shop de Gibson, fidèle aux instruments éminemment joués par le jazzman Wes Montgomery.

Cette guitare reprend les caractéristiques de celles produites au début des années 60, avec une configuration bien particulière puisqu’elle ne comporte qu’un seul micro humbucker en position manche. Or, les L-5CES n’étaient à l’origine proposées au catalogue qu’avec deux micro, un en position manche et un en position chevalet, et ce n’est que sur commande spéciale que l’on pouvait s’en procurer dans la présente configuration. Celle-ci offre tout le son rond typiquement recherché pour le jazz, et avec une défonce en moins dans la table massive on peut également s’attendre à des qualités acoustiques accrues pour cet instrument. C’est sans doute pour ces raisons que Wes Montgomery a porté son choix sur ce modèle, et on le retrouve entre ses mains sur nombre de pochettes d’album ou de sessions live filmées vers le milieu des années 60

La guitare elle-même est en excellent état, table massive en épicéa, fond et éclisses dans un bel érable figuré, la poignée présente une bonne prise et est parfaitement confortable. Tous les éléments esthétiques de la L-5 – qui a été de tous temps parmi les modèles les plus hauts de gamme proposés par Gibson – sont présents : cordier gravé, accastillage doré, larges incrustations en bloc sur la touche, incrustation dite flowerpot sur la tête qui renvoie aux origines du fabricant… du grand luxe !

Stunning L-5 electric model produced in 2015 by Gibson’s Custom Shop, faithful to the instruments famously played by jazzman Wes Montgomery.

This guitar takes after the specifications of those produced in the early 60s, with a very peculiar configuration since it has only one humbucker pickup in the neck position. However, L-5CES were originally offered in the catalog only with two pickups, one in the neck position and one in the bridge position, and it was only on special order that one could obtain them with the single pickup setup. This offers all of the round, warm tone typically sought for jazz, and with one less pickup route in the carved top we can also expect increased acoustic qualities for this instrument. It is likely for these reasons that Wes Montgomery chose this model, and it can be seen in his hands on many album covers or live sessions filmed in the mid 1960s.

The guitar itself is in excellent condition, solid spruce top, back and sides made of beautiful figured maple, the neck has a good profile and is perfectly comfortable. All of the aesthetic elements of the L-5 – which has always been among the most high-end models offered by Gibson – are present: engraved tailpiece, gold hardware, large block inlays on the fingerboard, flowerpot-style inlay on the headstock which sends us back to the origins of the manufacturer… total luxury!

Complete professional setup done in our workshop, in perfect playing condition. The guitar comes with its Gibson COA and tags.
