Un beau et rare modèle tout acajou, cette petite guitare a probablement contribué à la survie de Martin lors de la crise financière qui submergeait les États-Unis dans leur entièreté suite au krach boursier de 1929 : vendue pour la modique somme de $30, le fabricant de Nazareth est parvenu à en écouler entre 300 et 1000 exemplaires par an tout au long de cette décennie noire, assurant une véritable manne tandis que la crise frappait le pays de toutes parts. Le succès de ce modèle est sans nul doute dû à son bas prix, garanti par la simplicité absolue du style 17. Ici, point de fournitures luxueuses de bois exotique figuré, d’incrustations de nacre, ni même de binding, l’instrument est ramené à l’essentiel – table, fond et éclisses en acajou aux épaisseurs minimes, chevalet et touche en palissandre, l’unique décoration consistant en un modeste purfling autour de la bouche. Le vernis est également appliqué en couches pour le moins parcimonieuses. Le barrage scallopé et la construction interne de la guitare sont d’une délicatesse totale, mais ont bien été conçu pour les cordes acier – bien que celles-ci se doivent d’être d’un tirant faible, la transition entre cordes boyaux et acier étant relativement récente le chevalet et la bridge plate pré-datant ceux pensés pour des tirants plus forts. Tous ces éléments contribuent à rendre la guitare extrêmement légère et sonore, bien plus que ce à quoi l’on s’attendrait d’un si petit format.

Du haut de ses 93 ans, cette guitare a indéniablement du vécu, on peut noter des réparations anciennes sur le fond et l’éclisse supérieure. La guitare n’a heureusement subi aucune cassure de table, et ses éléments d’origine ont été préservés, y compris son vernis, son chevalet droit et ses mécaniques. On retrouve le tampon de Martin sur le couvre-joint et marqué au fer à l’arrière de la tête. Intégralement réglée, refrettée avec des frettes barres correspondant au frettage original et préparée pour nos soins, cette délicate guitare est parfaite pour le jeu – particulièrement plaisante en fingerpicking grâce à sa bonne largeur au sillet de tête et un espacement entre les cordes confortable.

A beautiful and rare all-mahogany model, this little guitar probably contributed to Martin’s survival during the financial crisis that submerged the entire United States following the Black Friday of 1929: offered for a modest $30, the Nazareth manufacturer managed to sell between 300 and 1,000 copies a year throughout this rough decade, ensuring a solid source of income while crisis hit the country from all sides. The success of this model is undoubtedly due to its low price, guaranteed by the absolute simplicity of style 17. Here, fancy exotic woods, pearl inlays, even binding are nowhere to be found and the guitar is reduced to the bear essentials: top, back and sides made with minimal thickness mahogany, rosewood bridge and fingerboard, the only element of decoration consisting of a modest purfling around the mouth. The varnish is also applied in sparse layers, to say the least. The guitar’s scalloped bracing and internal construction are utterly delicate, but have been designed for steel strings – note these should be kept to a very light gauge, the transition between gut and steel strings being relatively recent and the bridge and the bridge plate pre-dating those thought for higher string gauges. All these elements contribute to making the guitar extremely light with a very big sound, much more so than you would expect from such a small format.

During its 93 years of existence, this guitar has undeniably been through a lot: we can note old repairs on the bottom and side. Fortunately, the guitar has not suffered any cracks in the top, and its original elements are present, including its varnish, its straight bridge and its tuners. We find Martin’s stamp on the joint cover and branded on the back of the headstock. Complete professional setup and refret with bar frets matching the original done in our workshop, this delicate guitar is fully ready to be played – particularly pleasing in fingerpicking thanks to its large width at the nut and comfortable string spacing.
